How can I find out how much dust is in the air?

Here at Distinct Heating & Cooling we want to help save you money on costly furnace repairs in Calgary, while at the same time ensuring your indoor air quality is the best it can be. One common air quality problem homeowners deal with is dust. When dust, dirt, and other particles get inside the system, it can affect the overall air quality within your home.

Controlling dust levels has a direct effect on the air we breathe. To help control dust levels within your home, we recommend using the following tips and obtaining an indoor air quality test to find out exactly what is in the air.

Dust Control Tip #1

Check your air filters on a monthly basis and replace, as needed. The air filters help catch dust, dirt, pet dander, and other particles and remove them from the indoor air. However, when filters start to become dirty and are not changed, it can cause a strain on your home’s heating system. The furnace has to run harder, use more energy, and could even suck in dust and dirt into the system and start blowing it around the home!

A great idea is if you have a programmable thermostat is to set a “check air filter” reminder and your thermostat will remind you when it’s time to check the filters or set a reminder in your smart phone.

Dust Control Tip #2

Monitor the amount of dust within your home. Dust is a fact of life that we all have to deal with, even though most of us hate dusting. The frequency of dust accumulations is often directly related to your home’s heating and cooling system and the duct work within the home. If it seems like you are dusting on a weekly basis and the amount of dust seems excessive, then there could be a problem with your duct work or other part of the circulation system where dust and/or dirt is being drawn in.

If you have easy access to your ducts, you can check for openings and gaps in them. If you find any, these need to be sealed back up. If your home has serious dust problems and you need assistance in determining the causes, or you would like your indoor air quality level tested, please feel free to contact Distinct Heating & Cooling at (403) 477-3810 today!
